Jim Hanson

Jim Hanson

Chief Coach

Jim has been involved in forensics for over 40 years as a competitor and as coach. As a coach, his speech and debate team won 5 squad NDPA national championships, first place CEDA team in the nation (Jessica Clarke and Adam Symonds), first place NDT speaker (Charles Olney), and first place NPDA speaker (Miranda Morton) as well as over 1000 debate awards, 167 national championship tournament elimination and qualification awards, and 500 individual speaking events awards.

Jim is also President of West Coast Publishing, another non-profit, dedicated to providing outstanding topic materials and textbooks for debate and individual events. Jim is working to make Climb the Mountain a program that encourages and supports coaches, students, and judges to be the best that they can be. Students Jim has worked with through Climb the Mountain have been in late elimination rounds at Stanford and Georgetown, won the Korean and Japan national championships, as well as multiple awards at tournaments in the Northwest.

With over 10 years of experience within teaching competitive debate, Josue has excelled as an instructor of debate in a variety of settings. With experience in teaching debate from Grade school to upper-level university courses, Josue's curriculum's have been implemented in a wide range of academies and schools within Canada and abroad. Josue has privately coached a handful of Team Canada debaters and has had countless teams enter elimination rounds at the most prestigious international competitions. A seasoned debate champion and public speaking champion himself, Josue utilizes a lot of personal experience to motivate students and has a goal-oriented approach to teaching.

Alexander was an active member of the Vancouver debate, MUN, and business competition community, having participated in numerous tournaments and conferences around the world. In his high school debate career, Alexander participated in over thirty tournaments and won numerous awards including a top 10 speaking award at Heart of Europe and World Schools Debate Academy Slovenia. He was also a finalist at the University of British Columbia tournament and the Canadian Junior National Championships. In Model United Nations, Alexander has served as a delegate, staff, as well as a secretariat member and now serves on the Board of Directors of Canadian High Schools Model United Nations. In business case competitions, Alexander was on the winning team of miniEnterprize 2016.

Circuit LD debater for four years in high school, current NPDA Parli debater for the past two years. Head Policy coach at Bellingham United Debate since 2017 and independent LD coach since 2016 Currently pursuing Fairhaven Concentration in Decolonization, Anti-Blackness, and Post-Modernism at Western Washington University

With over 6 total years of competitive experience at the highest level of debate, and 2 years of coaching students in a variety of different formats, Chris has been able to introduce, coach, and perfect students skills in a multitude of different environments. With experience both debating in traditional circuits, local LD, and highly competitive national tournaments, LD TOC and NPDA/NPTE nationals, Chris is able to coach students to whatever level of debate they want to perfect. Whether that be simply improving at local tournaments, or attempting to achieve a national title, Chris has been able to coach student’s success in both avenues of debate. Not only has Chris, along with their former debate partner Serena, reached 8th at the prestigious National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence (NPTE), but they have also coached students to qualifying for the tournament of champions (TOC) two years in a row, and a policy team to the top 10 in Washington State. A versed debater in all different aspects of debate, Chris is able to utilize their specific subject location within debate to advocate for the students, and coach them to a place in which they are getting the most out of debate that they can.

Serena did LD on both progressive and traditional circuits for 4 years in high school, and advanced to elimination rounds in bid tournaments and at state. She also did some private coaching online via video chat (for mostly LD and PF) in the last few months. Serena did various IEs all throughout high school, and won (WA) state in oratory 2015 and tried nearly every IE offered in Washington. She was team captain for 3 years of high school and responsible for training novices in all events (especially oratory, expository, impromptu, and extemp).

Kinny Torre

Kenny is a coach at Western Washington University who debated for seven years (three years of policy in high school and four years of Parli in college). Kenny double majored in Critical Legal Studies and Philosophy at Western Washington University. For the past two years, he has consistently advanced to elimination rounds in the open division at both local and national tournaments including Lewis & Clark, University of Puget Sound, Linfield, Mile High and the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence. Kenny’s favorite arguments tend to be kritikal with an emphasis on Biopolitics, Neoliberalism, Post Colonialism and structures of debate. Kenny has helped with coaching for the past two years including two different high schools in Washington that placed within the top 8 at the state policy tournament.

Tyler Durbin is a returning Capitol Debate camp counselor with a background in instruction and teaching. After competing in Policy debate for four years of high school, he switched to Parliamentary debate in college. Recently moved to Washington, he's taking a gap year before returning to finish his Bachelor of Arts in Law, Diversity, and Justice at Western Washington University. Tyler is currently the Assistant Coach at Bellingham United Debate Club, where he enjoys helping people foster critical thinking and advocacy skills.

Ellen Kim

Ellen Kim

PF Lab Leader

Ellen did PF debate and public speaking for four years in middle school and high school, and she was the head of Debate and MUN club in her high school. As a member of the NSDA, Ellen competed in numerous tournaments, including Princeton, Yale, and Columbia, and won awards, including top PF speaker award and oratory speech awards at the Pacific Lutheran University tournament. As a debate and public speaking coach, Ellen coaches several junior and senior debaters and young public speakers. Ellen is currently majoring in Criminology at SFU and is planning to pursue a career in law.

Marianne Kim

Marianne competed in Public Forum debate for three years in high school, and competed in tournaments like Harvard, Yale, and Stanford. She has consistently won speaking awards at the tournaments she attended. Since then, Marianne has been teaching debate from introductory to novice classes. Marianne currently majors in International Economics at the University of British Columbia.
